Accelerated Math Information

Here are a few extra notes to help explain the Accelerated Math program a little better so it is clear what I expect from the students each week

We work on Acc. Math every Monday for the entire period. The students are expected to master 2 objectives per week, so if there are 10 Acc. Math days in the trimester, they should have 20 objectives by the end. They master objectives by first taking a practice assignment on certain objectives, passing it, then taking a test on those objectives. The students know that they can work on Acc. Math on any day of the week if there is extra time in class or at home, then scan before or after school to get another practice. I only print tests on Mondays because that is the day we dedicate the entire period to Acc. Math.  None of the students ever get tests printed on any other day.

Each week I remind the students that if they have not met that week’s objectives, they need to take it home to work on it so they do not fall behind. I tell them they should begin taking it home as soon as they fall behind instead of waiting until the last minute. They will not be able to catch up the last week of the trimester if they are significantly behind.

If they fall behind, on non-Accelerated Math days, they should work on anything in their folder. They can scan these any day of the week, and a new practice will print  to work on.  If they pass the practices they are scanning during the week, on Mon., when we do Accelerated Math, they will, most likely, spend the entire Acc. Math period taking tests (instead of taking a practice and then a test). Depending on how many practices they scanned and passed outside of class, they could take one or more tests on Monday, worth as many as five objectives each. Since they are only required 2 objectives per week, doing that makes up the objectives missed from previous weeks. I have seen kids get 8-10 objectives in one week because they worked outside of class on their practices.

Also, going above the required objectives gives the students extra credit which can greatly improve their grade.
